Hi, I'm Ellen
In November 2020, I hit my first $10k NZD month as a social media manager. It was a milestone I’d dreamed of for so long. Before starting my biz, I worked as a journalist at a gossip mag where I made $3.5k before taxes each month. I’d essentially tripled my income in the space of a year of going full time self-employed. Anyone would expect me to be popping champagne and shouting “I DID IT!” from the rooftops, right?
Wrong. It was actually the complete opposite. I was juggling between 10 and 15 clients during those last few months of 2020 and I was working 24/7. And when I say 24/7 I really mean it - I was replying to client requests on Christmas Day!
It was hard to tell how tired I actually was because I still loved my job. But here’s the truth: you can still burn out doing something you love. And The love for my job could only get me so far.
I was beginning to burn out big time. And my exhaustion was starting to reflect badly on my work with one new client dishing me some pretty bad feedback and choosing to (rightfully so) end their contract after only one month.
I could have thrown in the towel right then and there but I had a bigger picture in my mind. A future where making more money and scaling my business didn’t mean working more hours.
In 2021 I focused on hiring my dream team (and increasing my current contractor’s hours) along with diversifying my income streams and introducing new services and products. Of course, the biggest shift of all was increasing my prices, which have gone up by 300% since 2020.
So where am I now? Spoiler alert, I still LOVE my job and my social media agency and services make up over 50% of my income (yes, I’m a social media coach who is still in the game working with her own clients). But I also work on average 4-5 hour days. I take long breaks to watch Netflix, go shopping, have brunch with friends and head down to my local driving range - all the beautiful things in life that fill up my cup.
I have a team of 3-4 contractors who support my agency and also allow me the time to do epic things like this mastermind and my other courses!
